Digital Marketing for Doctors

Digital marketing for doctors is the work of helping the right patients find you, trust you and book an appointment, without crossing the lines Indian medical ethics draw around advertising. For most practices it comes down to five things: an accurate Google Business Profile, a website that answers what patients ask, honest reviews, carefully written ads, and fast follow-up on calls and WhatsApp.

This guide walks through each one, and how we run them for doctors across India from our base in Kolkata.

How Patients Choose A Doctor Now

The path is short and surprisingly predictable. Someone notices a symptom, or a parent needs a paediatrician on a Sunday. They search on their phone, often with “near me” or a neighbourhood name. Google shows a map, a handful of profiles and, more and more often, an AI-generated answer at the top.

From there the decision happens fast. They compare ratings and read the latest reviews. They check your timings, look at the photos, and maybe open your website to see whether you treat their exact problem. Then they call, send a WhatsApp message, or ask a relative to do it for them.

Every step in that chain is a place to win or lose the patient. Digital marketing for doctors is mostly about removing friction from that path, not about shouting louder than the clinic down the road.

Start With Your Google Business Profile

For a doctor, the Business Profile is often seen by far more people than the website. It is where patients check your hours, your location, your reviews and your phone number. If any of it is wrong, they move on.

Get the structure right first. Google’s guidelines treat doctors as individual practitioners. If you are one of several doctors at a clinic, the clinic has its own profile and each public-facing doctor can have a separate one in their own name. If you are the only doctor at a branded practice, Google prefers one shared profile named in the format “Practice name: Dr. Name”. Duplicates split your reviews and confuse patients, so we merge or remove them.

Then fill it in properly. Choose the most specific primary category, such as Dermatologist or Paediatrician rather than a generic Doctor. List the services you really offer. Set OPD timings that match reality, holidays included. Add photos of the entrance, reception and consultation room, and keep patients out of them unless you have their written consent.

Google retired the questions-and-answers section on Business Profiles in late 2025. The questions patients used to ask there now need answers in your profile’s services and description, and on your website.

SEO For Doctors: Pages That Answer Real Questions

Patients rarely search for a doctor’s name. They search for the problem: “knee pain doctor near me”, “PCOS treatment”, “root canal cost”. SEO for doctors means having a clear, accurate page for each condition or treatment you genuinely offer, written in plain language and reviewed by you.

A good treatment page explains who it is for, what the consultation involves, how long recovery usually takes and when someone should seek urgent care. It names the doctor, their qualifications and their registration number, and it shows when it was last reviewed. Google holds health pages to a higher standard of expertise and trust, and these details are how a page shows it.

Resist the urge to publish a page for every city or every variation of a keyword. Google’s spam policies target pages produced at scale to catch search variations, and a doctor’s site full of near-identical pages looks careless to patients too. A smaller set of genuinely useful pages does better.

The same pages feed Google’s AI Overviews. Those answers tend to draw on pages that already rank well and explain things clearly, so the work is the same: accurate, specific and written for patients.

Reviews: Ask Every Patient, The Same Way

Reviews decide the shortlist before anyone phones you. Most patients read a few of the latest ones, and they notice how the doctor responds.

Ask every patient, not only the happy ones. Google’s policies forbid asking only satisfied patients, offering anything in return, or posting reviews on someone’s behalf. A short message after the visit, sent to everyone, is both compliant and effective.

Reply with care. Patient confidentiality applies online. A public reply should never confirm that the reviewer was your patient, mention their condition or discuss their treatment. Thank them, acknowledge the concern in general terms, and invite them to call the clinic directly.

Ads For Doctors: What Is Allowed

Paid ads can fill a new clinic’s calendar quickly. Medical advertising in India, though, carries more rules than most categories.

Professional conduct rules come first. The Indian Medical Council’s 2002 ethics regulations still apply, because the National Medical Commission’s 2023 code was put in abeyance. They treat soliciting patients and self-promotion by doctors as unethical. Factual information is generally fine: your name, qualifications, specialty, timings, location and fees. Claims of being the best, promised results and patient testimonials used as advertising are where doctors get into trouble.

The Drugs and Magic Remedies Act bars advertising that claims to cure a long list of diseases and conditions. Google Ads restricts some treatments and medicines and does not allow personalised targeting based on health conditions. Meta rejects ad copy that implies the viewer has a health condition, so a line like “Struggling with piles?” will not run.

Within those limits, search ads work well for doctors. Someone typing “dermatologist near me” has already decided to see one. We run location-based search campaigns with call buttons, schedule them around OPD hours and track every call through to a booking. None of this is legal advice, and for anything borderline a quick check with a lawyer is worth it.

Social Media For Doctors, Within The Rules

Instagram and YouTube work best for doctors as teaching tools. Short explainers on common questions, myths you hear every week and what to expect at a first consultation build familiarity without tipping into self-promotion.

A few habits keep it safe. No patient photos or stories without written consent. No before-and-after images for regulated procedures. No promises about outcomes. If a post uses AI-generated visuals or voice, label it, since India’s 2026 amendments to the IT Rules expect realistic synthetic content to be marked.

Language often matters more than polish. A clear one-minute video in Bengali or Hindi can reach more local patients than a slick English one.

Calls And WhatsApp: Where Bookings Are Won Or Lost

A lot of marketing spend for doctors is wasted after the click. The phone rings during a busy OPD, nobody picks up, and the patient calls the next clinic on the list.

We set up call tracking so every missed call is visible, agree a quick callback routine with the front desk, and use WhatsApp Business for confirmations and reminders. Messages go only to patients who have agreed to receive them. Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, that consent and the purpose of each message should be recorded, and patients should be able to withdraw it easily.

What To Measure

Booked appointments are the number that matters. Calls answered and missed, WhatsApp enquiries, profile actions such as calls and direction requests, and cost per booked appointment tell you whether marketing is working. Followers, likes and impressions only tell you that it is happening.

We report monthly in those terms, channel by channel, so you can see which parts earn their place and which do not.

What usually goes wrong in doctor marketing, and what works instead.
What worksWhat usually goes wrong
Business ProfileOne accurate profile per doctor and location, with real timings and servicesDuplicate listings, a generic category and hours nobody has checked
WebsiteA page for each treatment you actually offer, reviewed by the doctorOne page listing every specialty, or dozens of near-identical city pages

How We Work With Doctors

Every engagement starts with an audit of what already exists: your Business Profile, website, reviews, any ads, and how the front desk handles enquiries. You get a short, prioritised list of fixes before any monthly work begins.

Our fee is a flat monthly amount agreed up front. It is never tied to the number of patients you get, because per-patient payments to third parties run into the fee-splitting rules in the medical ethics code. Every ad and post is checked against the rules above before it goes live.

We are a Kolkata-based team working with doctors across India. If your practice is in Kolkata, our page on healthcare digital marketing in Kolkata covers the local detail. Hospitals and healthcare groups should read our guide to digital marketing for hospitals, and the wider approach is on our healthcare digital marketing page.

The Bottom Line

Good digital marketing for doctors is quiet, accurate and patient-first. Fix the profile, publish pages that answer real questions, ask every patient for a review, advertise within the rules and answer the phone. Done consistently, that is often enough to stand out in a city where many practices still get the basics wrong.

Boost It Junior helps doctors get found, trusted and booked, within the rules. Start with an audit of your profile and website.

FAQ

Digital Marketing For Doctors: Common Questions

It is the use of online channels to help patients find, trust and book a doctor. In practice that means a well-kept Google Business Profile, a website with clear pages for each treatment, honest reviews, compliant search and social ads, and quick follow-up on calls and WhatsApp. Success is measured in booked appointments.

Doctors can share factual information such as their name, qualifications, specialty, timings, location and fees. The Indian Medical Council’s 2002 ethics regulations, which still apply, treat soliciting patients and self-promotional claims as unethical, and the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act bars cure claims for many conditions. Check anything borderline with a lawyer.

It depends on the set-up. Under Google’s guidelines, a clinic with several public-facing doctors has its own profile, and each doctor can have one in their own name. A doctor who is the only practitioner at a branded clinic should usually share one profile, named “Clinic name: Dr. Name”.

Fixes to a Business Profile can show up within a few weeks. New treatment pages usually take a few months to rank, longer in competitive specialties and big cities. We tell you up front which work is quick and which builds slowly.

Yes, with care. Google restricts some treatments and medicines and does not allow personalised targeting based on health conditions. Meta rejects ad copy that implies the viewer has a condition. Factual, location-based search ads with call tracking tend to work best.

Calmly and briefly. Never confirm that the person was your patient, and never mention their condition or treatment in public. Acknowledge the concern in general terms and invite them to contact the clinic directly. Never offer anything in exchange for changing or removing a review.

It depends on how many locations and doctors you have, how competitive your specialty is locally and which channels you need. We quote a flat monthly fee after an audit, never a per-patient fee. Our guide to SEO cost in India explains what drives the price.

No. We are based in Kolkata and work with doctors and clinics across India. Practices in Kolkata can meet us in person by appointment.
