What Is Local SEO?

Local shop appearing on a map search as a nearby customer walks through the city

Local SEO is the work of getting a business found when people nearby search for what it sells: on Google Maps, in the map pack at the top of the results, and in searches like ‘near me’ or ‘in Kolkata’.

For shops, restaurants, service firms and anyone whose customers live in a city or area, it is often the most dependable source of enquiries there is. Here is how it works, and where to start.

How Local Search Results Work

When someone searches with local intent, Google usually shows a map with three businesses, often called the map pack or local pack. Below it come ordinary web pages and directory listings. Local SEO covers both: your Google Business Profile, which feeds the map, and your website, which competes in the regular results.

A search counts as local when it names a place (‘electrician in Salt Lake’), says ‘near me’, or looks for something people usually buy nearby. Someone typing ‘dentist’ on a phone in Kolkata gets local results even without adding the city.

What Google Looks At

Google says local results are mainly based on three things.

Relevance. How well your Business Profile and website match what the person searched for. Complete, accurate details help Google make that match.

Distance. How far your business is from the person searching, or from the place they named. You can’t change this, which is why a business rarely ranks in the map pack far from its own address.

Prominence. How well known your business is. Google says this includes reviews and links from other websites.

Google also says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. Ads can appear above the map, but they don’t move your position in it.

The Parts Of Local SEO

Your Google Business Profile. The free listing that appears on Maps and in the map pack. The right primary category, real hours, services, photos and an accurate address matter more than anything else here. Our Google Business Profile guide covers it step by step.

Your website. A page for each service you offer, your name, address and phone number on every page, local business schema, and pages that load quickly on a phone.

Listings and citations. Your details on directories such as Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. What matters most is that your name, address and phone number match everywhere. Our comparison of Justdial and Google Business Profile explains how the two fit together.

Reviews. A steady flow of genuine Google reviews, each with a reply. Never buy reviews, reward them or ask only your happiest customers; Google’s policies forbid all three.

Local links and mentions. Coverage in local news, membership of trade bodies and chambers of commerce, and sponsorship of real local events all tell Google your business is known in the area.

Local SEO vs Regular SEO

Regular SEO is about ranking a web page against every site in the country that targets the same keyword. Local SEO is about ranking against the businesses near your customer.

That changes what moves the needle. Nationally, content quality, technical health and links decide most outcomes. Locally, your Business Profile, reviews, distance and consistent listings carry much more weight. Many businesses need both: local SEO for searches in their city, and regular SEO for customers who research before they buy.

Where To Start

Start by claiming and verifying your Google Business Profile, then choose the primary category that describes your core business. Add your real hours, including festival and holiday hours, your services, and photos of your place, team and work.

Next, check that your business name, address and phone number are identical on your website, your profile and every directory you appear on. Fix the old listings that show a previous number or address.

Then build a page on your website for each main service, ask every customer for a review, reply to every review you get, and track calls, direction requests and website enquiries so you can see what’s working.

How Long Local SEO Takes

Profile fixes can show results within weeks, because they change how you appear straight away. Ranking in the map pack for competitive searches across a big city takes months, and it depends on how many established businesses you’re up against.

Distance sets a natural limit. A business can rank well near its address long before it ranks across the city, and the regular results usually reach further than the map does. Our SEO company in Kolkata page explains how we plan for that in the city.

The Bottom Line

Local SEO is how a business gets found by the people nearby who are already looking for it. Get your Google Business Profile right, keep your details identical everywhere, earn genuine reviews and give each service a page on your website. Do that consistently and the map starts working for you.
